After selecting the teams for each league, each league is then separated into four groups of either three or four teams per group where each team will play against the other teams in a group home and away.
The leagues operate in a relegation and promotion setup whereby the winner of the group is promoted to a higher league whilst the buttom team at the end of the groups is relegated to a league below the current one. Winners from the League A’s groups will each earn a place in the ‘UEFA Nations League semi finals which will be played in the following year.
The ‘UEFA Nations League Finals’ is a short tournament played within a week because it starts at the semi final stage with the four teams who won their League A groups being the participants. A total of four matches will be played , that is two semi finals, third/fourth match and the final.
The Nations League offers a route to qualification for the Euros because the four group winners from each will play off in March 2020 to secure one of the four remaining places. The format will be one-off play-off semi-finals, followed by a final, per league, with the winning team from each of leagues A, B, C and D taking the last four spots at the Euros.
The first tournament began in September 2018, and four teams (Portugal, England, Netherlands and Switzerland) qualified for the finals which were held in Portugal and the host nation , Portugal were the eventual winners.
