The Telkom Knockout is similar to the League Cup in England, with only PSL teams competing for the glory.

This competition has seen its fair share of upsets over the years but much like the Nedbank Cup, one team has been the dominant force since the tournament started in 1982. The competition was then known as the Datsun Cup and has seen many sponsorship changes since then, with Telkom being the latest endorsers (12 years currently). Also take a look at the DSTV Compact Cup predictions.

Kaizer Chiefs have won an incredible 13 titles in this format and has been the driving force due to its massive supporter base. All matches, cup or league, featuring Chiefs are always sold-out affairs.

Their nearest rivals in regard to trophies won are Sundowns and Bidvest Wits, with three apiece. This proves t=the fact that Chiefs are rightly regard as cup kings in South Africa.

Between the Telkom Cup and the Nedbank Cup, Chiefs have a record 26 titles.

The decline of Chiefs in recent years are highlighted by this competition in particular as their last trophy win was almost a decade ago.

The trophy is only contested by the 16 PSL teams (see all PSL predictions) and hence every round throws up heated rivalries and many supporters and sponsors groan when they hear Chiefs will take on foes Pirates early on in this competition.

The PSL provides weekly upsets and this shows the nature of the competition brings about the best in the smaller teams, as they try win silverware and revenue each campaign. Looking for fixtures? See Mamelodi Sundowns fixtures, Kaizer Chiefs Fixtures or Orlando Pirates Fixtures.

Telkom Cup Predictions

The title has been won by eight different teams in the past 8 years, a further indication of the difficulty presented by facing quality teams in every round.

The 2017 Telkom Knockout tile went the way of Bidvest Wits in the past campaign, with the Johannesburg club ousting the ever-popular Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in the final.

Celtic won the trophy five seasons back and were desperate to add to their slim silverware pickings since the club’s inception in 1969.

New kids on the block Cape Town City defeated SuperSport United two seasons back and prior to that tournament Sundowns hammered Chiefs 3-1 in the final.

The biggest shock in the 2017/18 season was when Chippa United defeated Sundowns 1-0 in the first round.

Chippa would go on to lose to Chiefs in the quarter-finals.
